Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo are sharing how their friendship and personal experiences helped shape their new remix of “Expectations.”
During a conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the two pop stars discussed the creative process behind the collaboration. Roan explained that she wanted to introduce a queer perspective to the song, drawing inspiration from conversations about Rodrigo’s dating experiences.
The remix also marks an important milestone for Roan, serving as her first official featured appearance on another artist’s track. She described the collaboration as a natural choice because of her close relationship with Rodrigo.
Rodrigo revealed that Roan’s outlook on relationships had already influenced the original version of “Expectations,” making her involvement in the remix especially meaningful.
The original song appears on Rodrigo’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
Beyond the music, their conversation highlighted a friendship built through shared experiences and mutual creative influence. The remix brings their different perspectives together while maintaining the personal themes that shaped the original recording.
